HJ’s HAT (Highly Approved Trader) Standard is a great idea, not before time. I would like to nominate Bird & Yates, which was a traditional very old BMC franchise in Cannock but was redeveloped into a supermarket. The owner's son never enjoyed car or fuel sales, so he moved down the A34 about half a mile to an industrial unit behind the large Brindley Honda outlet. The new Bird & Yates only does servicing and MOTs, and is totally honest and upfront. At the supplying Mini dealer my partner's 5-year-old Mini was diagnosed as needing £2,000 of work to pass its MOT last year (it turned out none of this was actually urgent or needed to pass the test, for instance there was external corrosion on the silencer, but the inner lining is stainless). A week ago Bird & Yates (I asked them to check everything carefully and not to spare the cost if any work was required as I am driving it to my skiing holiday next month) could not find anything to do to the Mini and charged £45 for and MOT and to make the rear washer work. I have used them for many years now, and find them totally honest and upfront. They are not particularly cheap, just sensible and trustworthy. I have no connection apart from being a satisfied customer over many years.
Bird & Yates, Unit H Progress Business Centre, Brookfield Drive off A34 Walsall Road, Cannock, Staffs WS11 0JR is now in the area searchable Good Garage Guide at www.honestjohn.co.uk and we are now working with Motor Codes to set and maintain higher standards for motor repairs and servicing. Garages in the Good Garage Guide that let readers down get bounced, and similarly those enrolled in Motor Codes that fail to meet the standard, such as Wilsons of Epson, are expelled.
