Salesman failed to inform me about impending £500 service – what can I do?

I bought a used 2009 Volkswagen Golf a few months ago. The salesman who sold me the car failed to mention that, when the car turns four years old, it will need a new cam belt/water pump at a cost of £500. The car turns four years old this week and the dealer has called to "book me in for the replacement work", which was the first time I knew that this was needed. I’m very upset that I wasn’t told about this work. Had I known, I wouldn’t have bought the car in the first place. Is there anything I can do, or will I be forced to pay £500?
You are the first reader to bring this up as a potentially "misleading omission". I think you might have a case for a small claim and this will come as a surprise to the dealer. You can check the law here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/
