My van keeps cutting out - how can I fix DPF problems?

My son recently purchased a Peugeot 207 diesel van. Sometimes without warning the engine dies while he is driving. If he switches it of then on the particle filter warning light comes on but the car starts and drives normally until the next time. Is this a particle filter fault or something else?
From what you are describing it suggests that the DPF is starting to get blocked. Does the van do a lot of town type driving? If so then it may be worth taking the van onto a motorway or dual carriageway and drive with the engine at 2000 rpm for at least 25 mins. This may then clear the soot that is starting to accumulate in the DPF.
