What are my rights over my car's faulty brakes?

How many miles is it reasonable for disc brakes to last on a Suzuki Swift? It passed its MoT five days before we purchased it, only to find that it needs new discs and pads after just seven days of ownership. What are our rights?
If you bought it from a trader, then the trader is liable to replace the discs or give you your money back: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/ If you bought it privately, then, because this is a safety related fault, you can sue the vendor in the small claims track of the county court for selling you an unsafe car and also for breach of contract and fraud for supplying it with a fake MoT.
