Engine failure - can we claim against the dealer?

My son has a 2007 Ford Focus with 36,000 miles on the clock. A few months ago the oil light came on and oil leaked everywhere. The car was towed to a Ford garage where it has been serviced annually and the car has been diagnosed with an engine seizure. They say the cost to repair the engine is £3600 and the car us worth around £550. This all seems extremely unfair, can we claim against Ford at the service or the parts were faulty?
Depends when the car was last serviced. If within three months you may have a case against the dealer who serviced it.
