"Main dealer attitude, assumed to be capable but turns out not"
By Jeremy Gidney, 3 July 2024

I payed for one hour of inspection to diagnose a squeaking suspension fault. I was confident this would be found and diagnosed because the car was squeaking loudly and continuously all the time when driving, including the journey to the garage. I told them at the time it occurred while driving. I took my Volvo there because of their 4x4 experience and also because it was a family run business capable of servicing all cars. After an hour they said they could find no fault. I was disappointed, but had to pay to get my keys back. On leaving the car immediately squeaked again. I asked the service representative to come and sit in my car and listen, which he did and I made it squeak over a speed bump in the garage. He said they had spent an hour, they found nothing, and he would do no more. I emailed and asked the service manager to come for a ride with me in my car. He duly did, and in 10 minutes going along Cambridge roads the squeak came back and persisted. I said it took me 10 minutes to prove it, you spent an hour and found nothing, and again asked for a refund, which he declined. Basically you pay people because you assume they are competent. I proved there was a fault, even that they could not find, and they would go no further to help me. I am pretty confident the fault is a trailing arm bush, a known fault with this vehicle, which lies under a plastic cover. There is no evidence this was accessed. Feeling with my fingers under the cover the bush is flaky. Anybody off the street could take your money and say they could not find a problem, an honest garage should be more helpful, the inference was that I was in error or imagining it. It was clear, even if they heard the noise they would not know what to do next. I regret visiting this garage, my confidence in visiting was misplaced.

"The most reliable and professional Garage that I have ever dealt with in a lifetime of motoring"

I took my treasured eighteen year old Jaguar in for its MoT and Winter Health Check and Full Valet. It was back with me by the end of the day, looking fabulous. It's been the same for 10 years now with Wallis & Sons: they take highly professional and sensible care of my car at very reasonable, costs. I can trust them to do what's necessary, and to keep me well-informed about the options and their advice. It's a pleasure to be able to pick up the phone to such old school professionalism. BMW 3 Series. I had been noticing a lack of power recently, together with mis-firing when the engine was under load. A day later the 3ngine management light came on. Phoned Wallis, they scheduled the car in for 3 days time. Initial investigation registered that cylinder 3 was not firing due to plug and ingnition coil issues. With this fixed the engine was still not running correctly. Now the problem was timing on cylinders 2 and 4. Full investigation revealled Timing Chain, tensioner, and Vanos units. Issue at this point was we needed the car for the weekend for the start of our two week holiday. Wallis had the car fixed and ready by the Thursday morning, and I have to say that the car is running better than it has for a long time. The work was expensive, but prior to undertaking the work Wallis checked on the retail value of the car to see if it was worth undertaking the work.

Never be afraid to use these guys ! You will be treated like a customer should be. My Mercedes S Class is a chauffeur vehicle and has to be tip top. Wallis ensure you have a courtesy car if you require one and you drive away with confidence. They are excellent value and above all, trust worthy. Try them out, you won't be disappointed. Kevin

We took our car in for a repair to the brakes, however the parts were delayed and we needed to tow my wifes horse box, the service team managed to get us a 4x4 tow vehicle that we could use over night to move the horse and we then collected are car the next morning all washed and ready to go, great service and they are willing to do whats needed to get the job done and keep you mobile while yours is being repaired. Great help having a hire department on site too!

As a family we have used wallis's garage in Barton as our local garage and shop for many years. Recently they have helped us fix our ageing car after it broke down and with some great advice from Elliot wallis we have decided its time to move to a new one which they even helped us with! A great family run business in all areas and helpful and friendly staff willing to help even at short notice!

"Family run business offering great service and value for money"

I recently took my VW to Wallis & Son for the first time as a previous VW main dealer I was using had become very expensive, greatly lacked in customer service and could only give me a loan car in 3 weeks time! After using Wallis & Son I will definitely be going back and wish I had always used them in the past. Really friendly helpful people on reception. Loan car brought round for me ready to go and when I collected my car it had been valeted. The cost for servicing my car was also cheaper than the main dealer I was using. Highly recommend them!

I have used Wallis and son for both our family cars for over 15 years and wouldn't go anywhere else to have our cars serviced. Its a family run garage with Elliott Wallis running the workshop side of the business. Recently my daughter broke down on the M11 motorway on a busy Friday afternoon. After one phone call they arrange to have the car towed back to their HQ, arranged a courtesy car within 30 minutes all this in the space of two hours. They then fixed the car over the weekend and had it repaired in time for my daughter to collect on Monday afternoon. How is that for service! Their branded tyres are also priced at a healthy discount Highly recommended.

"A dependable family firm that provides excellent service at a reasonable cost"

I took my 9 year old BMW 530D in to Wallis of Barton recently because although I had just replaced the original battery, the new one was not holding a charge well. The engineer on service reception listened to my description of the symptoms and immediately diagnosed a faulty heater resistor, apparently a common failing on old BMWs, which turned out be a correct diagnosis. The job was completed the same day and they kept it overnight to check it was OK. I was supplied with a free courtesy car, and when I returned to collect the car the following day it had been beautifully valeted. Having looked at the job description on BMW forums it looks a horrible fiddly thing to do so I was quite happy with the hour they charged. I have used Wallis several times in the past and this is typical of the excellent service they consistently provide. Certainly a firm to be trusted in the Cambridge area.

"Expensive and offering poor value"

Took car for MOT, they did not complete this at the allocated time so when I went to collect the car 1 and a half hours after it should have been tested they had not started it. Then they we non too apologetic for not doing it. The car eventually failed and then they were not very friendly in pointing out the areas of concern. Took the car away then returned it to them for both restest and repair on some of the items. Despite asking them to consider waiving the retest fee they insisted that a retest fee was paid despite charging £225 for the work they did. The work was done to an acceptable standard but their MOT tester and service receptionist need to visit a different charm school. Average garage who charge top rates
