Have I fitted the clutch plate on my Peugeot 206 CC incorrectly?

I've just replaced a clutch kit on a 2004 Peugeot 206 CC. Is it possible to put the clutch plate in the wrong way? I've bled the hydraulic system and can see that the clutch is moving in and out but when I try to put it into gear the clutch area makes a sandpaper scratching noise and won't go into gear at all while the engine is running. When the engine is off, the the gears work without the clutch. What could the problem be?
It sounds as though you may have fitted it incorrectly. The clutch plate should be fitted with the flat surface towards the flywheel (the springs towards the pressure plate).
