Why is my Toyota Aygo using so much oil?

I have a 2006 Toyota Aygo 1.0 petrol which I have had for over nine years. I have started using the car more for work journeys and have noticed that the engine oil needs topping up regularly. To date I have added two litres of oil. I average 100 miles per day. My garage has told me it’s not uncommon to have to top up the engine oil, around 0.5 litres per 1000 miles. I plan to monitor the engine over the next two months, if it's still losing engine oil, could it be something else?
It's starting to wear. Probably needs a fresh set of valve stem oil seals.
