Ca n you offer any tips for looking after a new car?

I am in the process of buying a new Volkswagen Golf 1.4 petrol, which I plan to keep for five years. I have declined the paint treatment offered by the garage and have a few questions: 1) What do you currently recommend for treating the paintwork? 2) Does a new car need "running in" these days? 3) I will do 10-12k miles a year and Volkswagen has quite long service intervals. Can I ask for an early oil change, or would that effect the warranty?
Autoglym High Definition wax, £45 a tub, applied twice a year during weather like today's. Running in a petrol engine here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/running-in-a-petrol-engin.../

Change the oil and filter at least every 12 months or every 10,000 miles whichever comes first. As long as it's done properly using the right oil and right filter, that will not affect the warranty.
