What would you recommend to replace my Honda Civic lease car?

In a few months, the contract on my personal contract lease car (Honda Civic i-CDTi) will finish, and as I am considering retiring sometime in the near future, I do not wish to lock myself into a new agreement. Therefore, I intend to buy something to do my daily commute of sixty miles. This could be for one or possibly two more years. I normally cover approximately 15,000 miles per annum on mainly A-roads. I have around £6000 cash to spend. I have no interest in "badges" and would consider a petrol or diesel hatchback or saloon, but I don't want a small car. Safety and reliability are my first considerations. Given that budget, and considering the demands of my commute, what cars would be on your shortlist?
Ford Fiesta 1.6 diesel. The previous shape model with the 92PS PSA engine and no diesel particulate filter. It will need a timing belt every 60,000 miles or so, but it's very economical as well as decent to drive.
