Broken dipstick

My 2002 Peugeot 106 1124cc petrol owned from new, and always main dealer serviced. On recent return from annual service the plastic end of the dipstick was found to have broken off - and the broken section is jammed in the tube so the oil level cannot be checked. Dealer says this a frequent problem. Is there any record of this? Dealer says at my expense it will have to drop the sump to extract the jammed plastic. Do I have any redress against the dealer? I know the dipstick was not broken when I checked the oil last month.
Yes, common problem. 10 year old car, so no redress against the dealer.
