How much should it cost to change a cambelt?
I own a Peugeot 2008 petrol car. At its recent five year service I was advised that the cambelt would need doing next time. I enquired about a rough estimate and was shocked to be told that it would be about £1500 and would be in the garage for 2 days - presumably including the normal service. I was staggered as previous cars, including Peugeot, that I have owned have had a cambelt change at 5 or 6 years at something like £400/500, about the same price as a major service. Can you please explain this high cost?
£1500 for a cambelt change sounds excessive, although it would be important to clarify if this does or does not include a major/minor service. You may wish to compare quotes with other Peugeot dealers as well as independent Peugeot specialists. It is likely that your Peugeot is fitted with a wet belt design, which requires additional labour when changing as the oil must be changed and the oil system is cleaned to ensure adequate lubrication of the belt, which is why the cost is higher than you have experienced previously.
