Why does my handbrake stick on?

Why does my daughter’s VW Up’s handbrake sometimes stick on? It’s been to the garage multiple times and had most parts replaced. The garage is unable to remedy. It can be released by revving the engine, but is very loud, and smells awful.
You are not alone in having this problem on the Up and there does not appear to be a mechanical solution.

If the garage has checked and lubricated the shoe mechanism then all we can suggest is that when your daughter parks the car that she reverses the car for around 6 inches, puts the car in gear and does not apply the handbrake overly tight.
