Many thanks for your advice on the quotation I obtained from Mercedes Watford of £ 2,700 odd to replace a pair of front suspension struts and provide a new pump to the system on my 2004 E class Mercedes. You suggested that I should seek out an independent garage that knows how to get the job done at a sensible price. I looked on your web site Good Garage Guide and contacted M-only who gave me a price of £972 to renew the front offside suspension strut on the basis they would renew only the parts that needed renewing, i.e. the front offside strut, test the suspension pump and renew it only if necessary. They dealt with the repair very promptly and efficiently and I am very grateful and obliged for your advice that has saved me best part of £1,700.
