My Audi A3 had a suspected gearbox bearing that was failing, which my local garage quoted well over £1,000. Their advice was to wait until it got worse before they could confirm the problem. If it was the gearbox, letting it get worse seemed an expensive and risky course of action, so I decided to go straight to a gearbox specialist rather than let the problem develop. I found Hardy Engineering, Leatherhead, in the Yellow Pages and after a quick phone call to them, they agreed to first test drive the car, as that wasn't conclusive they then agreed to get the car up on one of their ramps where they diagnosed that it was indeed the bearing. Once diagnosed, I was instantly given a quote to cover the work, which was less than what my local garage had quoted, plus they agreed to book the car in for next day to prevent further damage to the gearbox. The quote was very good, plus they said they would check the clutch and give me the option of changing that as it would involve only parts and no extra labour. Once I agreed for them to do the work, it was done quickly - 2 days - and I was kept up-to-date with progress; and their advice was that the clutch didn't need changing. Finally, their work comes with 12 months warranty. This was old-fashioned, quality, workmanship where I, the customer, felt valued and it was a pleasure to do business with them. I thoroughly recommend them for any gearbox or transmission work.
