When should the wet belt on a Peugeot be changed?
My daughter has a 67 reg Peugeot 108 1.2. It has done about 35,000 miles. She was advised to get the wet belt changed due to the cars age not the milage. This will cost about £800 at a local independant garage. Do you think she should go ahead with this? I watched a YouTube video of a wet belt change on a 108 with 65,000 miles on it and the mechanic really struggled with it due to the restricted space in the engine compartment. I am worried the garage will cut corners on it.
It is recommended that the wet belt be changed at around 62,000 miles or 6 years. The job involves removing the sump to clean the oil pickup strainer, replacing the belt, tensioner, idler, crank seals and a full oil/filter change. It is highly recommended to use a garage experienced in PSA 1.2 PureTech engines to ensure the oil strainer is cleaned, which is crucial for the longevity of the new belt.
Replacing the wet timing belt on a Peugeot 108 1.2 PureTech engine typically takes between 2.5 to 5 hours of labour. While manufacturer standard times can be as low as 2.9 hours, many independent garages allow 4-5 hours to properly clean the sump and oil pickup, which is essential to prevent future engine issues. Total cost for labour and parts usually ranges from £600 to over £1000, depending on if it is done at a dealer or independent.
