Is the Citroen 1.2 Puretech engine reliable?

I have seen a Citroen C3 Aircross 2023 at an excellent price £10595. My concern is the notorious online reviews of the Peugeot-Citroen 1.2 Puretech engine. It comes across as a horror story waiting to happen. Is it a case of buyer beware, or is the 1.2 a 'wronged' engine?
Some owners have experienced issues with the PureTech engine, in particular with the wet belt design which can degrade over time resulting in failure. Good maintenance can help to mitigate these issues and later models are less likely to be affected. Buying a car with a complete service history and continuing regular maintenance will reduce the likelihood of an issue, but as with buying any used car there is always an element of risk.
