Is the alarm going off a sign of a weak battery?
I have a 2017 BMW 440i still running on its original 12-volt battery. Although there are no obvious signs of failure, the alarm went off yesterday for no apparent reason and I’ve been told a weak battery could be the cause. Given the battery is now eight years old, I’m considering replacing it as a precaution. I’d appreciate your thoughts on both points please.
A 12V battery of this age may well be coming towards the end of its life and electrical anomalies such as this could be an indicator that it is past its best. You can test the battery performance yourself with battery tester, or a local garage can test it for you. If you do need to replace the battery we would advise using a reputable independent specialist to change this for you as it may well require coding to your vehicle.
