My Nissan Xtrail, was lurching whilst trying to get into gear. Rushed it to the Nissan dealer, who pluged it in to find the problem. Told me not to drive it as the gearbox had some problem, and get the RAC to take it to Stephens as they are the experts with gearboxs. But as soon as the technician lifted the bonnet he spotted a heap of leaves and a mouse has chewed through the wires leading to the sensors in my gearbox. Within a short time wires were replaced amd my car is now running like a new baby. Well done Stephens, well pleased you fixed my car. Thank you

Stephen's engineering rebuilt by Omega (BMW auto) 2.5TD gearbox 2 years ago after a botched repair in Italy. Their work was meticulous, including getting parts from the USA. This time, a small leak was not the sump oil seal but a gear selector oil seal which they diagnosed before I even arrived! 2018 is their 50th anniversary in business which tells you a lot.

I was recommended to this garage and was very please with the service. They were quick honest, informative and very friendly. Thought it was a gearbox and turned out to be wheel bearings which was much cheaper than a gearbox!

Jason talked me through the complexity of my Chrysler 300C auto transmission and diagnosed/turned round within 48 hours. So many garages are reluctant to explain what they have actually done - not here. First class.

Had the auto trans oil changed in my 2011 astra 1.6. I was told the fluid could only be partially changed and it wasn't possible to change the filter. The job was done quickly but I thought the £150 charge was a bit steep.

My Dad took his car into his local garage worried about a knocking sound. His garage quoted him £1,200 following a 3 minute inspection claiming the automatic gearbox was at fault. My Dad contacted me to see if I knew anyone who may give a second opinion. As it happens I did. Stephens Engineering in Ware specialise in automatic gearboxes and had done some great work for me in the past. So my Dad took his car in and Bill Stephens, the owner promptly took the car for a test drive to diagnose the fault. As it turns out the knocking sound was one of his wheels working itself loose. "No charge," said Bill glad it was nothing serious and thankfully you brought it in when you did. The wheel was going to come off sometime soon and may have caused a nasty accident. Now that's what I call good honest service.

My local garage diagnosed a gearbox fault in my BMW 730d....and suggested a specialist would be best. After a few calls I ended up speaking to Bill and talking about how it could be fixed. With simple sensible advice I booked the car in. Job done in 3 days at a reasonable cost and no fuss.. Great service

Had trouble with my Gearbox would not select any gears. Water had mixed with my gearbox oil many months ago and waiting for this to happen. I called Bill who was very polite and informative. Bill happens to know the garage i use in london. I took time to pop over to see his repair process and what would be involved with my full rebuild. It all looked very impressive. I agreed a price and took the car over, they offered a soultion to separate the oil cooling from the engine, this would prevent me having the same issue going forward,. Arrange to collect the car and let e know if there was going to be any additional cost. I have to say i am more than happy, got my car back and it drives like a dream. it turned out to be cheaper than first expected and Jason made a note of a part to keep my eye out on. Over all i felt like i know these guys a long time. there was a no nonsense attitude to the repair and kept me informed all the way though. Over all Marks out of Ten i would give it Ten. I have yet to go back for my one month /1000mile check but i really have confidence in these guys. Very Happy to recomend this company

My wife's elderly Corsa automatic would not reverse. The HJ site directed me to FATE the Federation of Automatic Transmission Engineers of whom there are but a handful in UK. The nearest to me was Stephens in East Herts near Ware. A phone call and I was on my way for an immediate evaluation followed by a partial stripdown and repair to the box which had suffered a leaking seal and worn out reverse brake band. A few days later the vehicle was back on the road and my pocket reasonably lighter compared to what a main dealer would have charged. The beauty of such real engineers as Bill and his son Jason is that you get to talk to the person who knows what he is doing rather than some dolly bird in a posh office with free coffee who isolates the customer from the shop floor.
