My Discovery had a gearbox fault. First it felt like the clutch was slipping then it refused to go forwards at all - but still went OK in reverse. Several Land Rover specialists diagnosed, without seeing the vehicle, and told me I needed a new gearbox. "Happens a lot, love", "Common problem" etc, etc. And 3000 to 5000 to fix it. Took it to Autotrans on a trailer and they phone back the same day to say it was done. Seized selector shaft and it didn't even need replacing - just cleaning and refitting. Picked it up today and the bill was under 200 quid! If they are bisu, it's because they are good and worth waiting for.

Following the excellent advice from Honest John regarding the need to have automatic gearbox oil changed every 5 years, I searched for a member of Federation of Automatic Transmission Engineers and chose Autotrans of Gloucester. Their helpful and friendly Receptionist advised that they could change the oil in our 2013 Audi A1 sealed for life automatic gearbox but wouldn't start work on it until it was cold, so we dropped the car off in the afternoon. It was promised to be available lunchtime the next day and they were as good as their word. When we collected the car they gave us advice on how to drive the car, how the brake pedal would disconnect the clutch so we should press it hard and not use it to creep by dabbing the pedal as this wears out the clutch. We found them very friendly, professional, and highly competent.

I searched for a while to find somewhere that I would trust to provide a proper flush and change of the transmission oil and filter on my much-loved 2006 W211 E280 Mercedes. I admit to being a very fussy engineer with 39 years of experience in a highly complex and demanding environment where quality assurance is paramount for performance and safety reasons. My father was in the motor trade, so I was servicing cars from 12 years old and I still like to keep my hand in. Needless to say, I like to do my research before I hand over my keys to anyone in this business! I found a couple of companies near to me who professed to offer a complete transmission fluid service, but when I called to quiz them on the specifics of what they provided I found them woefully lacking: one would have flushed and replaced the fluid but not changed the dirty filter, and the other would have changed the filter but only replaced the fluid in the sump. Quite by contrast, Auto Trans specialise specifically in the maintenance, rebuild and servicing of automatic gearboxes; they are engineers as opposed to fitters. When I rang to quiz them, I spoke with the General Manager, Sophia; she was happy to answer all of my probing questions including the exact process that her engineers would follow. On the day of my service, I was greeted by a very knowledgeable, friendly and professional team led by Sophia. As others have noted, the premises are spotless, and they have to be if they are working at component-level on highly complex and sensitive systems such as automatic transmissions; not quite an operating theatre, but not far off! Very kindly, I was treated to a close look at the work benches; it is reassuring to see hydraulic test rigs set up to test the valve bodies and shadow boards holding the multi-plate clutch assemblies and other components of the dismantled boxes. For a very reasonable price, I had a proper service and left fully assured that my gearbox had been thoroughly flushed of fluid, filled with fresh fluid and fitted with a new filter. I cannot emphasise how important it is to have this done every 40,000 miles; do not believe the 'sealed for life' rubbish: this is an essential service if you want to avoid trouble with your expensive automatic transmission. I have no hesitation in fully recommending this company; I had a two-and-a-half hour round trip to visit them, and it was well worth the time and miles. If you are out of warranty, I would strongly urge you NOT to take your car for transmission work to a main dealer or other generalist repair shop; it is far better to take it to a company like this who understand automatic transmissions right down to the component level. Finally, a big thank you to Sophia and the team for a really great experience; I will definitely be using you going forward and recommending you without reservation.

My Car VW Golf MK6 Has a common problem with the Automatic Box DQ200 7 speed Mechatronic Unit & Clutch Problem. :-( Doug was very helpful and repaired the car. I had my XF gearbox oil and filter changed here. Doug Pretty, the owner, is one of the most knowledgeable people I've come across when it comes to automatic transmissions. He clearly loves what he does and describes it as more his hobby. His workshop is a pleasure to see, spotlessly clean and equipped with all the latest testing equipment. I wouldn't hesitate in trusting any gearbox work to Auto Trans. You can rest assured any work will be done correctly and to a very high standard.

Took my old BMW 320d to check out autobox problems. Arrived out of the blue, was listened to politely and was able to have a service on the autobox same day without fuss and any sucking of air throught teeth. On collection was given honest assessment of what was found and was impressed by the technical knowledge (most of which I think I understood). If the service does not cure my problem it will be a pleasure to go back and have further remedial work done at Autotrans Gloucester Ltd.
