Alex and his team have looked after my car for the last 5 years and I have always felt confident to return as they are reliable, friendly and happy to answer my questions. Sadly a couple of weeks ago, without warning the engine on my car seized which could have been a complete nightmare for me to navigate, as I wouldn't of known where to start! Alex and his team were brilliant from the moment the RAC delivered my defunct car to their forecourt, right through to the end of this episode. They gave me a courtesy car which meant I could continue to work; they looked at various options to get the engine replaced; we talked through the risks and benefits of repairing versus replacing the car (which had done a very high milage) and when I decided not to get it repaired, they even found me a buyer and arranged the transfer of ownership. They removed every stressor possible which left me free to concentrate on finding an alternative. In visiting different, local garages, I got to experience the full range of customer service standards.....that journey highlighted HOW exceptional the service is at AJ Dunlop!!

"Trustworthy"

I have been using this garage for many many years for one simple reason. I trust them. From the top bloke down everyone I ever have spoken to displays knowledge and competance. That does not mean everything is perfect all the time, but it does mean that when something isn't as they thought they are straight on the phone to discuss matters. So keen was Alex (owner bloke) to ensure I was happy about an unexpected issue he had taken photos of the offending article, and when I turn up to give the ok to extra work he came down from the confines of his office to personally show me the various bits and pieces. I should stress we don't really know each other except as business/customer. At other times he could easily have exagerated problems or future possible failures, but has not. What I have found is that he (Alex) gives you an honest opinion, answers questions in a wholly practical and truthful way, gives you time and space if you need it to check what he is saying is right and never never never pressures you. Like most of us I have been to places that suggest a fix at £n, and once they have started you get the call that other problems have miraculously surfaced and suddenly the bill is £5x. I have never experienced this at A J Dunlop, in fact I sometimes feel they really do reduce their charges when a higher charge could have been justified, and yes there have been times I have had this happen to me. I can see a poor review or two on this site which is disappointing. But what I would say to the chap with the turbo below is that modern cars do use cumputer controlled monitoring for a good reason and if you want to really know what is going on inside the working bits you need the diagnostics. I am confident that had you authorised the go ahead on your motor the mechnic would have quite easily spotted the split hose and given you a happy call to tell you the repair is going to be much less than expected. How would you have felt about your other mechanic if he had advised you about the split hose and not recognised deeper issues indicated by the computer and had to advise you the charges were massively increased? Can I guarantee that Dunlops would have done the right thing, no, but every experience bar none tells me they would have. If this sounds all too good to be true it is only because it is an accurate reflection of a great little garage that has built a loyal customer base founded on quality of service, reasonable costs and excellent communications. As a bonus Alex has been known to let out his ferrari as a courtesy car so how is that for two way trust?

Took my car in as it had broken down locally. They said that it needed a diagnostics check and that they would have a look at it. The diagnostics check came back saying it was a possible turbo fault (£900). They were not able to fit me in for another 10 days - 2 weeks for a job like that so I had to took the car to another mechanic who immediately spotted a pipe on connected to the air filter that had a big split in it. This was fixed the same day at a cost of £35. I had payed AJ Dunlop £70 for the wrong information and for my car not to be fixed. I later rang them to ask about a refund and was told that I had paid for the computer to do the diagnostics check and could not have a refund. All I wanted was a knowledgeable mechanic to look at my car and fix it, not a computer to over charge me for vague and in accurate information

A tyre replacement was needed for my Ford Transit Connect.A common occurance with the number of roads in state of disrepair.I spoke to the garage the day before having work done to explain I had noticed tyre was a little under inflated and suspected it may have picked up a puncture. On closer inspection of the tyre I found a nail which confirmed my suspicions. The next day I took the van in to AJ Dunlop where they replaced the tyre quickly and very efficiently.I was very happy with standard of service and compliment them on this.

I recently used this garage to have my car MOT and I cannot say any negatives about this garage. The service was extremely friendly and professional, and the price was very competitive. As I went to collect my car I was greeted with a warm welcome from the owner, and also the MOT tester even spoke to me to explain the 1 advisory on my car, which I thought was great. Overall I was extremely happy that the garage was efficient, on time and a good price.

"Rude and unhelpful."

I guess the local rich folks must get a better service and that's how this garage keeps going. The receptionist was so rude she was actually obstructive. Car was left for me to extracate from the trickiest position. No calls or updates. Lots of sucking in of breath and use of word 'expensive'. Never again.

Have been using Dunlop's garage off and on for many years, but for the last five years have been using them exclusively due to very bad experiences with other garages (one refused to give my car back for 9 months despite paying them. but that's another story). They are not the cheapest, although no where near main dealer prices but have always given good honests advice for free and have always done an excellent job. On the very rare occesion that I have questioned something, they have explained or fixed the problem without charge and have always called if they have found unexpected issues with the cars. Highly recommended.

I moved to the area more recently and before I had any need to book my car into a garage A J Dunlop Car Servicing was recommended to me by three separate individuals at different times. Having used the garage on several occasions since I can see why! A mid-sized garage with a friendly and helpful local garage service they have helped me with unusual knocking sounds, services and fitting in MOTs last minute! I would, and regularly do, recommend Alex and the team to anyone.

My 20 year old daughter (who knows nothing about cars) phoned A J Dunlop to ask for a price for a 60,000 mile service. They told her they could not give her any idea of the price until they had it on their ramp, so she booked it in. A couple of hours after dropping the car off she phoned the garage and they told her it would cost £500+vat to change the filters and as they had not looked at the brakes yet it could cost more. Shocked to be faced with a bill that might be well over £600 she said she did not want to go ahead with the service. When she went to collect the car it was not in their yard although there was plenty of free space and she was told it was parked on the street five minutes walk away. When she got to the car she found her service documents strewn all over the seats. When she turned on the ignition she was blasted out by the stereo which had been left on full volume! Clearly this is not a professional garage. Why could they give no ball park figure for a service - do they not do these regularly? Why did they need to get the car on the ramp to work out something so simple as the fact it would need new filters? This is definitely one to avoid!

My Volvo V40 broke down about a quarter of a mile from the this garage with smoke pouring out from under the bonnet. I had never been there before yet they treated me immediately as a valued customer. The car was recovered, I was kept up to date with the progress of the repair, I was offered a loan car to get me home, as a part was not available until the next day and the charges were very reasonable. Moreover the staff were friendly and helpful at all times. I know this is how all garages should be but these days such good service is a rarity and I commend them to your readers.

After using the supplying garages for our cars for many years they just got too expensive. Cost at this family owned and operated garage were less than half. The service is excellent, on time, cost effective and very friendly. Even a free loan car. Most impressive is the cleanliness and tidyness of the workshop - looks like a Formula 1 garage.
