Are Ford Duratec engines durable?
My 2006 Ford Fusion has done 102,000 miles which I don't consider high mileage. Recently while waiting at traffic lights, after a 25 mile journey, I noticed bluish smoke coming out from the bonnet close to the windscreen and a smell of burning (oil perhaps?). A friend has claimed that these Ford Duratec engines are not good at going beyond this mileage due to the valves burning. The smoke was only noticeable while stationary. The car runs well starts first time and is serviced regularly so I wonder is my friend correct regarding valves and the lack of longevity for this engine?
Firstly, you need to determine if the smoke is actually coming from the exhaust (i.e, the oil is being burnt inside the cylinders and coming out from the exhaust). Does the exhaust have any leaks around the manifold? Or is the smoke coming from an oil leak (rocker cover gasket area) and leaking onto the exhaust manifold. How much oil are you using?
If the oil is being burnt inside the cylinders then it will be either that the cylinder bore/piston rings are beginning to wear) or that the valve stem oil seal are staring to leak (allowing oil to get into the cylinders). Worn valves do not result in oil being burnt.
