How often should I replace brake discs?

My 2016 BMW M135i owned since new with only 52000 miles just had a BMW Health Check which showed that the front brake discs had a slight lip and the pads were on 4mm. Both the discs and pads are original from 2016. BMW recommended that I had both renewed and I replied that as they would be servicing and MoT the car in March 2025 and that I would only cover an additional 3000 miles in that time that I would consider renewing them then. My question being that by March 2025 the pads would probably be at 3mm and worth renewing but should I also need to get the discs renewed? As you will appreciate there is a much bigger cost in having the discs replaced.
It is always recommended that the pads are replaced at 3mm or above and your warning light should also advise when to change. As for the discs a small lip is not unusual and if the new pads fit inside the lip then they should be okay, however we would suggest that the disc thickness should be checked as well. You may want to consider looking for a Independent BMW garage to replace both pads and discs (the discs are not that expensive if sourced by the ) if you are considering keeping the car long term.
