What is the best procedure for a passenger to follow if a driver falls unconscious at the wheel?

Driving down the M1 in our new Toyota Prius, my wife in the passenger seat asked what she should do if I dropped dead at the wheel. I can assure you that I have no intention or likelihood of doing so; however I could not think of an answer. When I learnt to drive in our Morris 8, my Dad told me to pull on the handbrake, knock it out of gear, and steer for the edge of the road. Of course, in the Prius there is no handbrake, the central console is in the way, and I am not sure what effect the control lever would have. Have you any advice?

In the hope that your right leg does not go rigid and press the accelerator, all she can do is signal and steer the car to the hard shoulder, use the retardation position of the gearswitch (the position for descending hills) and when it has slowed to less than 5mph press the brake switch on the dash.
