What medium-size family car should I buy for £8000?

I have £8000 to spend on a medium-size family car that has good safety, reliability and mpg. What are your suggestions?

Common sense says a KIA Cee'd or a Hyundai i30, partly because of their good reliability, and partly because of their 7 year and 5 year warranties. Whether to go for the 1.6 CRDi diesel or not depends on your mileage. High mileage with a lot of open road driving, yes. Low mileage with a lot of short runs from cold, petrol is the more sensible choice.
