The MoT Files: Pass rates for all manufacturers

The pass rates for every manufacturer shows some interesting trends. This covers all the years the DVSA has data for - up to 2016.

While there are doubtless some discrepancies due to the way the makes and models are entered - it's worth remembering that this data comes from every MoT testing station up and down the country - it nonetheless shows which brands perform strongly when it comes to passing the MoT.

As you'd expect, it's high-end cars that dominate the top of the list with manufacturers like Aston Martin, Ferrari and Bentley. Given the money these cost, you'd expect owners to treat them with care and they're unlikely to cover as many miles per year as your average Ford Focus.

Aside from those, there are some interesting results. Infiniti and Dacia both perform well, but this is a good case of looking beyond the headline figures. While the two manufacturers have high pass rates, they are also both relatively new to the UK car market, Infiniti having only launched here in 2009.

With fewer old cars on the road, you'd expect a higher pass rate. Ditto, Dacia was reinvented back in 2012 under Renault, with many of its models only just going through the first MoT.

So what of the mainstream manufacturers? MINI is the best performer, followed by Lexus and impressively, Mercedes-Benz with a better pass rate than both BMW and Audi.

At the other end of the table, Renault is well below par with an overall pass rate of just 52 per cent, worse than SsangYong while Citroen and Peugeot don't fare much better with a pass rate of less than 60 per cent.
