I have some sympathy for him, though no doubt some would call him thin skinned.

Well that's one place I won't be going then. Not vegan myself but Mrs B is.

I read somewhere (can't find it now) a landlord is banning cooking of meat in his property. I wondered if they can make that a condition?

It is entirely reasonable for a restaurant to cater for different dietary needs, providing the policy is clear before booking/eating. Diners can make their own assessment.

I would not expect a kosher restaurant to sell shellfish, a sushi bar to serve roast beef with trimmings, a restaurant specialising in French cuisine to sell me a take away curry.

Businesses have every right to adopt (legal) policies which suit their commercial interests. I don't expect Tescos to sell car tyres, or Halfords to sell bacon butties (unless they so choose).

It is sheer arrogance for a minority dietary interest to insist on special treatment. Those businesses which wish to fulfil their needs are very welcome to do so.

It seems odd to me that any business would deliberately exclude a cohort of customers. In any group of people (say six but depends on age) then it's quite likely that one will be a vegetarian and/or one a vegan. So the restaurant hasn't lost one customer, they've lost six. If that business model works for them then so be it. I'm neither BTW but some friends are.

That would be difficult to enforce and probably questionable legally as it might ght amount to discrimination.

Whilst its his right to cater for the sorts of clients he wants, according to the article he had already agreed to cater for the vegan customer but forgot on the actual day, so it seems a bit rich to accuse vegans of having mental issues because his memory isn't up to scratch and he presumably didn't have the use of a pen and notepad somewhere near the telephone.

Maybe he would have been better making it clear on his website or my other means that he prefers not to cater for vegans etc then they'd know they would get better catered for elsewhere and everyone would be happy.

There was a recent case of a very small bakery that would not make a cake for 2 males and they cited religious grounds for refusing. This went back and forth through the courts and eventually the bakers lost on discrimination of minorities. So if some vegans want to be awkward I suppose they could have their veggie based cake which could be made with eggs and milk all vegan of course!

Sexual orientation is a protected characteristic (along with religion, disability etc) of the equality act - hence the refusal of the bakery to bake a wedding cake was discriminatory.

Dietary orientation is not yet protected in the same way AFAIK.

There have been bakery cases in both the UK and the US. In both instances, the Supreme Court found in the bakery's favo(u)r.

Presumably some 'rules' have changed. Offering a product or a service to the public used to be an 'offer to treat'. Even if a customer was willing to tender the advertised money the seller was not obliged to sell. But I suspect in today's society no doubt some Rights campaigner would litigate.

They'll be no trouble identifying Vegans , they feel the need to tell you, all about it, within three seconds of meeting them.

It wasn't clear to me who was having those 'issues' - chef or customers ?

It was the chef - they customer had phones and asked if they could be catered for as they were a vegan, the chef said that they could. He then forgot to take a note of it and on the day the customer came and they did not have anything ready so they cobbled something toegther for them which was not great and the customer then psoted a complaint online about it.

It would have been a very long and expensive round trip, anyway .... :-)

I mean at the end of the day, if you are vegan why would you want to go somewhere you aren't wanted when you should give your business to businesses who appreciate you, and on the other hand if you own a business you are entitled to to cook what you want, so really before the culture wars this would be a non story.

Look just find a vegan restaurant and demand a carnivore option be on the menu.

I'm not vegan but I always search out vegan restaurants when on my travels - my issue is I'm dairy intolerant where my health is in danger if I eat any dairy products. It's always a million questions when ordering food. If I find a vegan restaurant I know I can relax and be able to choose anything on the menu including cake!

The whole business is a chef trying to make a name for himself and get free publicity. He has now attracted the attention of a militant animal liberationist and the pair of them have been in and out of the media and the courts thus getting both of them the attention they crave.
