Do I have to pay for the DPF to be repaired in the Volkswagen Golf I just bought?

My 20,000-mile Volkswagen Golf GT TDi 2.0-litre has just had the DPF, engine management and diesel glow plug lights come on. I bought it six weeks ago from a main Volkswagen agent. The dealer who has looked at it tells me it needs a new DPF and the part cost is £1960. They also say it's not covered by warranty. What on earth can I do? I've googled it and it seems many other people are having similar problems.

That's the problem with DPFs, and Volkswagen's less than satisfactory method of regenerating them. You're lucky this did not blow the engine. Remember, "Few things in life are as reliable as a Volkswagen".

But happily, in this case, the dealer who sold you the car is 100 per cent liable in law and MUST rectify the problem entirely free of charge to you. See: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights

Alternatively he can take the car back and give you a full refund.
