How can I un-clog my Vauxhall Zafira's diesel particulate filter?

My Vauxhall Zafira comes up with the warning light for the particulate filter, and a couple of times has almost ground to a halt. Will hard driving help and for how long? Is there a fuel additive that might help as a flushing agent or as an everyday addition?

Driving at a consistent 2,000 - 3,000rpm on a motorway should help it to regenerate. Short runs from cold will clog the particulate filter which is designed to collect particles on start up, then burn them off later in a car's journey. It won't burn them off if there is no 'later'.
