My 2004 Porsche 911 Carrera has suffered a major engine failure - will Porsche offer goodwill on repairs?

I bought a 2004 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe Anniversary secondhand in March 2006 when it had done 8000 miles. I've had it serviced as required at the main dealers ever since. It has now done 29,500 miles. Five weeks ago it went in for a minor service plus tyres. There was a tiny noise from the engine this Saturday. Two miles later there was a crashing noise. There were no warning signals, there was plenty of oil still in the car and no smoke. It appears a component in the engine has failed and we will have to have a new one. I'm still in shock and hoping for a helpful response from Porsche, as it's no longer in warranty. Apparently there is no means of predicting this. Is this a recurring reliability problem with 996 engines? We cannot believe something we bought because of it's supposed reliability has let us down so badly. Have you got any enlightening information?

We haven't heard of anything like this happening before as Porsche engines are usually very reliable and robust. Contacting Porsche is a must as they should be able to help you, considering the car is only a few years old and has done relatively few miles, and especially as it was serviced just a few weeks beforehand.
