Buying Mum's Jazz - what to check out?

I'm about to buy my Mum's old 53 reg Honda Jazz (at trade-in price). As far as I know there has never been anything wrong with it apart from an EGR valve replaced under warranty. I note from your Car by Car breakdown that there are known gearbox issues. How would I check for this? You also mentioned more general deterioration after 6-7 years. Is there anything else I need to check that Mum may not have noticed?

You'll first be aware of the gearbox bearing from the noise. But chances are this has already been replaced in the car's life. But you're buying a 9 year old car that was built to last 7 years. You might be lucky. You might not.
