Why are all motorhomes diesel?

I wish to purchase a new mobile home but have been informed by my local dealer that they do not manufacture petrol or hybrid vehicles only diesel. With so many towns and cities both here and abroad discussing the banning of diesel engines, it seems ridiculous they can only be purchased with such a restricted engine. Is my dealer correct?

The dealer is right. Motorhomes are based on large vans and these all are diesel-powered, due to their size and weight. A petrol Fiat Ducato-based motorhome, for example, would return about 10mpg. Van-makers are introducing electric powertrains to their large vans, but these typically have a range of 100 miles, which will be little use for a large and heavy motorhome.
