Could my Renault Megane's valves have hit the pistons if the timing belt has slipped?

My 2001 Renault Megane (69,851 miles) has lost compression. It appears the timing belt has not snapped but has possibly lost teeth. I have been led to believe that the repair could exceed £1000. Does the head need to come off, and could this have bent the valves?
If the timing has slipped then yes, valves could have hit pistons. Use the Good Garage Guide on this site to find a decent independent garage or try www.fer.co.uk.
