A well known fault was diagnosed in my 2003 Mercedes-Benz SLK - should it be recalled?

I have a 2003 Mercedes-Benz SLK 230 auto that we've had serviced regularly at our main service centre. The last service cost £600 and, for the first time, they said there was a problem with an oil leak from the engine cam into the wiring loom. It has resulted in the engine warning sensor coming on. I was told that this is a known problem and a new loom will be required for £3500. The car is not worth that even though it is a great looker. Next stop looks like the scrap yard, a great shame for what is a lovely car. As a design fault, shouldn't this be a recall repair by Mercedes-Benz?
Unfortunately not for a car that is now 14 years old. It's a well known fault. Could be that an independent Mercedes-Benz specialist has a fix that makes economic sense.
