Why won't my mechanic change my car's transmission fluid?

I have a 2003 Audi A6 4.2 V8, with almost 150,000 miles on the clock. It has always been regularly serviced by an independent Audi specialist, and runs like a dream. However, my mechanic insists that they can't change the gearbox oil, as it is "sealed for life". From reading your column, I have my doubts about the wisdom of this. What is your advice?
Who is your mechanic? Get the car to a member of www.fedauto.co.uk who use a special dialysis type of machine to simultaneously drain and refill the transmission at precisely the right temperature and pressure. Some bloke with a box of spanners simply can't do that.
