Does the Mk2 Audi TT have a timing belt or can chain?

I have owned an Audi TT from new in 2008. In Jan 2013 when booking the service I enquired whether the timing belt needed replacing as it was five years old (35k). The dealer advised that the Mk2 had a cam chain not a belt and that they did not need changing. However, I took the car in for a service last week and I have now been told it is a cam belt. Can you clarify this for me? Does the Mk2 Audi TT have a timing belt or can chain?
They were initially belt cam, then a newer chain cam engine started being fitted from about 2009. Easiest way to check is to look. If there's a belt cover on the left end of the engine as you face it, then it's belt and definitely needs a new belt, tensioner and waterpump. If it's chain, it's early chain and these were more reliable than later chains when the stamping tools used to make the chain links started to wear out.
