Engine failure after service - is the garage responsible?

Three weeks ago I had the timing belt and water pump replaced on my Volkswagen Golf Plus diesel with 90,000 miles on it. Two days ago the car suffered catastrophic engine failure and the conrod put itself through the side of the block. My local garage not interested and state it was nothing to do with the recent work. Could the timing have been set slightly off and this is what caused the conrod to go pop?
This can happen on 1.9TDIs. But be suspicious. Get www.scotiavehicleinspection.com/ involved.
