Should turbo engines be allowed to 'spool down' after spirited driving?

The turbo recently failed on my Rover 75 diesel. It failed at 90,000 miles, resulting in the fitting of a new turbo. The garage advised that I let the engine idle for 30 seconds before turning it off. This, they said, allowed the turbo to spool down from huge rpm and to cool down while oil was still lubricating the bearings, the reason for turbo failure.
Many thanks. It’s of interest to anyone with a turbocharged engine and it’s the advice I have been giving to owners of cars with turbos for 17 years. Many carmakers agree. Skoda even includes it in the driver’s manuals for its turbodiesels.
