The MoT Files: How Manufacturers perform in the first MoT

Dan Harrison, Editor
Fri, 11 May 2012

The tables below show manufacturer pass rates for the first MoT. The first table shows mainstream manufacturers (more than 5000 tests), while the second shows all manufacturers with 50 or more tests.

As expected, they largely reflect the model pass rate tables for the first MoT. The top half of the first table (based on 5000 results and more for a better impression of how mainstream manufacturers perform) is dominated by Japanese and German (or German-owned) manufacturers, with the top five comprising of Lexus, Suzuki, Honda, SAAB and Toyota. Inside the Top 10, Mercedes-Benz and its subsidary Smart are side-by-side at 83 per cent.

At the bottom of the mainstream models table is Renault, which, despite closing the gap to the average pass rate in recent years, has been unable to move up the table. The firm can draw encouragement from the fact that older models like Espace and (the previous shape) van-based Kangoo brought down the overall pass rate and that newer models like the Clio perform well. The gap between Renault and other manufacturers has been narrowing (see the manufacturer's graph here), and time will tell whether this will result in a higher placing in years to come.

MINI's place towards the foot of the table is strange, as other years of registration perform well in the MoT test. 2008 is however, the first year that the newer-shape MINIs would have gone through their MoTs, and as it's a small model range, a bad result for one model is a bad result for the entire company. Clubmans have a better pass rate than One and Cooper models, though all are below the average for that year.

Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge sit at the bottom of the full table (for reasons outlined here).
