That's probably a rev limit imposed by regulation

The '90s Vauxhall Cavalier used in the BTCC would also rev to 9,000 rpm with minimal modifications to the bottom end from the production 16v Red-top engine

The rev limit on my 1860 x-flow was set at a safe 8400. Would have been fine at over 9000 but since the builder was me I decided to be careful. Problem on these was always the valve gear, geometry with race cams was a pain.

Bought a Mallock that was fitted with a 1300 Cosworth BDH. With F1 cams and fueled with methanol it revved safely to 14000. After some negotiation the seller kept the engine, I bought the rolling chassis. Too much like a bomb for my liking.

Seems surreal now that in 1979 and 1980 these cars were raced by then current F1 drivers as a support race to the Grand Prix itself.
I can’t see Mercedes releasing their two drivers today to race a BMW a couple of hours before driving for M-B.
