Which tyres should I fit to my Jaguar XF to improve the ride comfort, and should I tell my insurance company?

I have just purchased an XF premium luxury diesel. I let the dealer convince me that the 19-inch wheels and Dunlop Sport tyres as standard were great (they did not seem bad on the test drive after my very soft 18-inch XJ) but after 800 miles the ride is too firm. The XJ and S Type were very comfortable rides. I’m thinking of changing the wheels to 17-inch or 18-inch and would value your advice on which size, tyres and do I need to notify the insurance company?

I've had mixed and surprising reports from readers of 17-inch and 18-inch wheels on the XF and have only ever driven them on 19s and 20s. 20s only make sense on the XFR, where they are necessary. I thought 19s relatively okay. Logic says 18s must be softer and 17s softer still, but, strangely, that isn't guaranteed to be the case. Yes, you would have to disclose the swap to your insurer.
